Alan’s Kaʻewai Stream Team Story:
Initially I worked in the Kaʻewai Stream by weed whacking the California grass so it would not spread into my yard. About a few years ago I was approached by one of the teachers, Faith Aiu, to help her and her students in restoring the stream into a Hawaiian garden. Faith is the granddaughter of Kumu Hula, Maiki Aiu, and the niece of our Imua69 classmate, Colleen Aiu.
Being involved in this project has made me aware of the relationship between native plants and our Hawaiian culture. It has also been a heartwarming experience for me to see the next generation learn our culture and malama ka ‘aina.
